Artist Statement
~This blog is based on Andy Goldsworthy's earth art sculptures and designs. Andy Goldsworthy bases all of his art on plants, trees, or anything that Earth created. For example, he made a sculpture out of ice and it was very interesting. Usually his artwork is abstract or very unique. In my artwork I made on my blog, I tried to make some abstract designs as well as some simple designs. I also clustered some objects that had bright vibrant colors together against a dark plain tree and it ended up looking amazing.
I had built all my projects either in the woods, or on the grass. My zig-zag tree project was made on a trail in the woods. I picked up some sticks I found along the trail and laid them down on the tree. I liked the design, except it looked a little colorless. So, I found some green leaves and fallen fern leaves on the ground and I put them in the triangles that the sticks had formed. I continued the pattern all the way down the birch tree. This project was one of my first. I really liked it because it combines the white and brown color with little specks of light green.
A lot of my projects were very time-consuming and there were bumps on the way too. During my building of the flower cluster project, the wind kept blowing all my flowers off the branch, and I had to keep putting them back on a lot. It was pretty frustrating, but I found a way to keep them all in place. I put the heavier flowers in a cluster and I put little pink specks of flower petals in the cluster. I really liked the color combinations, so I stuck with that idea. Another little bump along the way was when I was creating my stone and flower project. I had lined them all up in a straight line, and made the dandelions go in the middle of each stone, but the wind kept blowing the dandelions away, and it was very frustrating. By the time I had collected all my dandelions, it was time to go in. I then changed my design. I made the stones and flowers go in a spiral tightly packed together, so nothing would blow away. It turned out to be very pretty and I really liked it better than the boring straight line.
All of my projects turned out how I had expected. I had drawn all my ideas in my field notebook and I made my creation as close as I could make it. All of them turned out very well in the end and it was a really fun experience. I learned from the art projects that I did that you have to be patient, and things will turn out good. I was getting really frustrated when the wind was blowing everything away, but I was patient and eventually, the wind stopped and I finished my projects. What I would do differently next time is to have a better plan on what I am going to do. A lot of my projects that I did I drew in my notebook, but sometimes, I had no idea what I was going to make or do, and when I finally thought of something, it was time to go in. To have a plan for me would have been better.
A lot of my projects were designs and patterns. I really loved the unit and it was really fun creating my earth art and seeing what I can make out of things I see everyday. It was a really fun experience!
